How to collaborate with a designer

Not a creator? Not a problem. Plenty of people pair up with designers to bring their campaign to life visually. From Gordos Pizzeria – who teamed up with illustrator Fizzy Wizzy – to Sebastian Croft who collaborated with Kieran Blakey – some of our biggest sellers have been collaborations. To help you work with a designer to bring your vision to life, our sales team have pulled together a few tips.

PUT SOME FEELERS OUT

Don’t be afraid to approach designers with your project! If you truly love someone’s work, ask them! If they can’t they might be able to refer to another great designer.

TALK ABOUT THE CONCEPT

Once you have a creator on board, have an open chat with them about what you have in mind. Is there a story behind your campaign? Does it fundraise for something? Is it helping you achieve something? Is there a particular message you want to convey? Talk to them about that and listen to their opinions on the subject too.

CREATE A MOODBOARD

Pull together some images that represent the idea you’re after so your designer has a visual starting point. Don’t know where to start? Browse our website, use Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, visit galleries. If you want to collaborate with a particular designer, highlight some of their work that inspired you to work with them.

BE CLEAR ON WHAT YOU’RE AFTER

What it is, what are the specs, what it will be used for etc. It’s better to make it clear at the start so that your designer knows what to expect.

BRAINSTORM WITH YOUR DESIGNER

Bounce ideas off each other, talk about what you do and don’t like – something unexpected could come out of it!

BE UPFRONT WITH MONEY TALK

It doesn’t have to be awkward. If you have some budget, share it, if you’re not sure, say it! It can be a conversation with your collaborator, and everyone feels more at ease when it’s all on the table.
