(AK) We met in 2009 and have been great friends ever since, baked chocolate cakes when the 2011 London riots were on, drank secret beers in a German nunnery in 2016 and sang along to Cher in Sydney surrounded by shooting fire glitter guns in 2018. During these times we also started our freelance careers and made it to where we are now - so a lot has happened in those years. (KAS) Haha indeed, we actually met in a cafe on Brick Lane in 2009, a lot has happened in those years and we live on different sides of the planet now, yet we still manage to talk all the time and meet up in exciting & exotic places like Northern Germany. What's amazing is we’ve actually never made work together until now. I think Annu made a single cover for a very bad band I had at one stage though.
(AK) First starting point was our mutual love for cars - we thought that should be the carrying theme for the over all design. We thought the design should be something reflecting the crazy time we live in yet something simple - a tee that will be topical but works well on its own too. Living in these strange times there has been a lot of talk about a major shift in society that we hopefully get to experience after this epidemic. We talked about an idea of an individual being in charge of their own path and changing their ways - and then it clicked U turn, thats what we should all be doing and it even made a fun pun - you turn. (KAS) Perfectly well said, this scenario we are in now is obviously horrible, and it is sad that these things normally bring humanity together, but it’s also beautiful when it happens. I think it has given a newfound respect for each other and for the planet. I hear people say ‘oh when are we going back to normal’, that normal was not good, we were treating each other & our environment very poorly & we need to reassess that. So yes a YOU-turn in our behaviour was well overdue. On a side note, to keep things light, it was also just a way for us to talk about cars for a little bit.
(AK) Throwing ideas around, gathering fun references and then being surprised by what comes back and researching more, chatting more and finally building design based on the exchange is just really fun. It is important to get to look at your own work from someone else's perspective and collaboration will open up your eyes to new things to use in your own future work as well. And its just way more fun to send silly videos back and forth than laugh at memes on your own. (KAS) Well I normally say it's a really good way to meet other artists, but seeing as I already knew Annu, maybe its a way to get closer to that person. I think Annu’s work like most great artist is really just an extension of her personality. I have her work in my apartment, so in a way I feel like she is always around. So this is probably why this project was so easy really, we barely had to discuss what we were going to make, we just started assuming that there was nothing else we could have made but a car with a social issue attached to it.
