World’s First Grotesque Font
This campaign has now ended
Limited edition design by Fraser Muggeridge studio for the Posters Collection.
We are a graphic design studio in London, involved in various types of work for a range of clients, largely within the fields of arts and culture.
We combine a rigorous approach to typography with an often playful approach of making by doing – using constraints and rules to allow a logical process to form the end result.
Thorowgood’s Seven-line Grotesque, cut c. 1834, was named with the first recorded use of the term Grotesque, which would become a popular name for sans typefaces in the UK and in Germany. The typeface was revived and digitised by Commercial Classics in 2019. This design is lifted from a billboard campaign which ran across London in Winter 2020.
