Multitudes

Jocelyn Tsaih (b. 1992) is a Taiwan-born, Shanghai-raised artist currently based in Brooklyn, NY. She is a painter, illustrator, and muralist. Though she works in various mediums, the connecting thread throughout her work is her depiction of amorphous figures. Often portrayed in abstracted, liminal spaces, she aims to touch on the emotions as well as the otherworldliness of our human experience. 

My design is based off of a drawing I made right after I watched Everything Everywhere All At Once. I was inspired by the way the movie portrayed the limitless possibilities of our existences. Seeing this theme shared through a story about Asian immigrants reminded me of how important it is to envision and embody expansiveness for ourselves. My signature figure usually exists in one typical form, but for this design I re-imagined the figure in different shapes. This is my way of conveying the boundlessness of the ways we can choose to show up and take up space in the world.

This shirt celebrates how we, as the AAPI community, contain multitudes despite the umbrella terms used to describe us or the stereotypes that try to put us in boxes. It's a celebration of the diversity within our cultures, languages, and stories.
