Hatton Typeface

2TE) We met through the powers of Instagram. Having always been a fan of Mats’ work over at Pangram Pangram and our desire as a studio to create a typeface that represents our working environment - it felt a great opportunity to connect.

(2TE) We had been discussing a typeface in the studio that was inspired by the area of our now previous space in Farringdon, more specifically the notorious diamond district, Hatton Garden. We had begun researching heavily into the handcrafted typography found within the area and immediately being fascinated by the lack of consistency and the extremities of some of the quirks found within the hand rendered signage systems. We approached Mat with our findings and analysis and the creative process began. We both sketched ideas and details we wanted to maintain and capture. Much like a project we would tackle in the studio, it was extremely collaborative and we maintained communication via Slack throughout.

(2TE) In my opinion, embracing others and what they can bring to the table, keeps us ever learning and developing as creatives. Being able to be part of a process that doesn’t form part of our daily workload and tackle a medium that we don’t frequently create, is great and exciting. Collaboration forms the basis of a lot of our self initiated briefs in 2020.
