A Daruma doll (้็ฃจ) is a hollow, round, Japanese traditional doll modelled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism.
The eyes of Daruma are often blank when sold. The recipient of the doll fills in one eye upon setting a goal or making a wish. In this way, every time they see the one-eyed Daruma, they recall the goal. Once the wish/goal has been fulfilled, the other eye is then filled in.
These dolls often represent good fortune, luck, fulfilling ones dreams and setting goals.
