This set the pattern for future carnivals, me going alone so I was free to explore wherever I wanted to go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9524\" style=\"width: 2940px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9524 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ian-watts-5.jpg\" alt=\"everpress-blog-documenting-notting-hill-carnival-ian-watts\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ian-watts-5.jpg 2940w, https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ian-watts-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ian-watts-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ian-watts-5-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2940px) 100vw, 2940px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sound system just off Westbourne Park Road, 1984 \u00a9 Ian Watts All Rights Reserved<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That very first carnival proved to be a formative, seminal experience, both in terms of the photographer\u2019s own life and the career he\u2019d go on to have, and in the wider history of carnival too. \u201c1976 was the year of the first major carnival rebellion and uprisings led by disenfranchised black youth, and I got caught up with the crowd and ended up running with them,\u201d he says. \u201cI actually took some of my first ever photos there with a newly purchased 35mm stills camera, which I was learning to use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s something I have never forgotten,\u201d he continues. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t just because of the uprising at the end, but also because I had never been to an event like that before, with so many black people. To counter this I cover carnival in a more positive way. Even strictly in terms of the direct value it brings to the area, it\u2019s still rare that carnival is given the credit it deserves. \u201cAccording to the London Development Agency, carnival contributes almost \u00a3100m a year to the city&#8217;s economy and supports the equivalent of 3,000 full-time jobs,\u201d Ian points out. \u201cMany local shops and businesses thrive through the extra tourist revenue via hotels, restaurants and public transport as a result of carnival. It gives people the opportunity to listen to music, eat food, and interact with new and old friends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting too on how carnival has evolved over the years, and whether it\u2019s been able to preserve its original spirit, Ian\u2019s feelings are nuanced. \u201cThe original concept [of carnival] lives on, but it has been commercialised by large brands, who don\u2019t always bring benefits to carnival creators,\u201d he says. \u201cI think local people and surrounding areas should get more benefits from hosting this event on their doorstep. It\u2019s a great opportunity to catch up and bump into old friends and family as well,\u201d says Ian. \u201cI believe it is important to go along and support the event because it is a unique black experience that I\u2019ve always made an effort to attend, even during the difficult times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed the ability to capture this complexity might be the essence of Ian\u2019s photographs of Notting Hill Carnival, and what makes them so singular.
