Though the scheme had mixed success, costing somewhere between $200 million and $2 billion to run by the early 2000s despite multiple studies claiming it had \u201cabsolutely no measurable effect on drug use,\u201d the tees have been an ironic favourite since the \u201890s. But it was the shop\u2019s next owners, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, who would go on to make fashion history with their DIY T-shirts. Though tees had been around since the early 1900\u2019s, it was Marlon Brando and James Dean sporting them in\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Streetcar Named Desire <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1951) and\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebel Without a Cause <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1955) respectively, that really helped put T-shirts on the map. This text-based approach was echoed about four decades later in the work of Off-White founder Abloh, who\u2019s made the relationship between words and objects an ongoing theme in his designs.
