{"id":5635,"date":"2019-06-11T11:20:11","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T10:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/?p=5635"},"modified":"2019-06-12T11:46:16","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T10:46:16","slug":"a-change-of-kit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/a-change-of-kit\/","title":{"rendered":"A Change of Kit: WWC2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we caught up with the gang, they explained that the gulf between the hype around last year\u2019s World Cup and the lack of visibility for this year\u2019s helped inspired the project. \u201cFootball should be enjoyed by everyone equally,\u201d as they put it, \u201cIt should not segregate, or be confined to half the population, which we\u2019ve seen all too often throughout history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think the general public tends to put women at the periphery of our cultural discourse.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true. Although it\u2019s come a long way since the 1991 inaugural tournament in China, women\u2019s football doesn\u2019t yet enjoy the same status as men\u2019s. In England, the FA Women&#8217;s Super League has been steadily gaining recognition and standing since it was founded in 2011, but WSL players still earn 100 times less than their male counterparts, with salaries of about \u00a326,000 dwarfed by the \u00a32.64 million of the Premier League.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5677\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5677\" style=\"width: 683px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5677 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC_1483-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Women's World Cup T-shirts photographed by Charlie Jeffries\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC_1483-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC_1483-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC_1483-768x1151.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Women&#8217;s World Cup T-shirts photographed by Charlie Jeffries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest factors that\u2019s helping to change this is the growing awareness and support for the game, and A Change of Kit aims both to promote the tournament and give practical help too, with all profits going towards organisations fighting for equal representation for women&#8217;s football in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Change of Kit curated a host of talents to design their shirts: Soft Power, Francesca Williams, Charlotte Ager, Karabo Poppy, Sarah Boris, Nina Carter, Matteo Gualandris, Warriors Studio, Minute Books, Roger Gutierrez, and Amy herself, so we asked a few to share why the project was important to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Karabo Poppy<\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a mandate to preserve the African Aesthetic, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karabo Poppy\u2019s illustrations <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">give figures in the periphery the chance to take center stage and be represented in the conversations that extend the African continent.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think the general public tends to put women at the periphery of our cultural discourse, especially when it comes to sport. I&#8217;m hoping this project can help displace any misconceptions about what we, as women, can achieve in sport.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Francesca Williams<\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an eye for the smallest details, art director and graphic designer (and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/francesca-williams-confidence-belief-design\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everpress regular<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Francesca Williams\u2019 practice centres around fashion and editorial based projects.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs someone who loved playing football when I was younger, I think it\u2019s important for women&#8217;s sport to be valued just as much as men\u2019s.
