Worn and seen in the right spheres, these small, unspoken acts of dissent, provocation, satire and solidarity can make big waves. Little wonder then, that we\u2019ve been diligently applying words to this most accessible item of clothing (named, incidentally, after the capital letter it resembles when laid out flat) for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Feminist tees for the Tumblr age <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2018, fourth-wave feminist internet snark is the gift that just keeps on giving. Statuses, tweets and memes are increasingly likely to appear on our tees, from the cleverly doctored Cyndi Lauper lyrics: \u201cGirls Just Wanna Have Fun(Damental Human Rights)\u201d, to the rise of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2014\/08\/08\/ironic_misandry_why_feminists_joke_about_drinking_male_tears_and_banning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">ironic misandry<\/span><\/a>, with its many, merciless variations on drinking\/bathing in \u201cMale Tears\u201d. Witches \u2013 out of the broom closet and flourishing in the digital realm \u2013\u00a0are also transforming their digital missives into woke wear, with indie crafters inviting us to <span class=\"s3\">&#8220;Hex The Patriarchy&#8221;<\/span> \u2013 an imperative turned praxis last year when witches around the globe (including pop star Lana Del Rey) cast a <span class=\"s3\">mass binding spell<\/span> against America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BPjSADyg-A7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">pussy-grabber-in-chief<\/span><\/a>, Trump.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s12\">If the political slogan tee is ubiquitous in 2018, it\u2019s because injustice is equally so<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Just The Same But Brand New: Recycled Slogans<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Increasingly, the net is responsible for both new, 280-character-ready slogans, and the revival of retro originals, zingers culled from the placards, banners, ephemera and tees documented in yesteryear\u2019s photos. Instagram, with its wealth of diligently tended archival accounts, is frequently responsible for this re-popularisation process. It was an image on the lesbian culture archive h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y, for example, that prompted LA-based designer Rachel Berks to reproduce the now infamous, Cara Delevingne-approved \u201cThe Future is Female\u201d tee, inspiring of a slew of response slogans (\u201cThe Future Is <span class=\"s3\">Queer<\/span>\/Genderfluid\/Non-Binary\u201d) and inadvertently igniting debates about artistic credits along the way after Berks failed to disclose the phrase\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/19\/fashion\/a-feminist-t-shirt-resurfaces-from-the-70s.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">radical, \u201870s lesbian-feminist origins<\/span><\/a>. And as we witnessed last year, its not just individual bottom feeders that co-opt cultural work; the corporate mainstream is a repeat offender when it comes to monetising our phrases. Femme-identified peeps were amused and peeved in equal measure last year when corporate clothing brands such as H&amp;M began shilling t-shirts emblazoned with declarations such as \u201cFemme Forever\u201d, glibly appropriating a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-4491380\/Lesbian-blasts-Topshop-H-M-Femme-t-shirts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">complex, historical and deeply political phrase<\/span><\/a> for profits.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2421\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2421 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/download.jpeg\" alt=\"silence = death\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/download.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/download-300x193.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Silence = death. A protest against Ronald Regan&#8217;s funding cut for research and the prevention of AIDS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Wear it loud: queer couture\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">LGBTQ communities are particular prolific when it comes to creating original, satirical resistance tees, as evidenced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearinggayhistory.com\/about\"><span class=\"s3\">Wearing Gay History archive<\/span><\/a>. Retro gems tend to run the gamut from PG wit (\u201c<span class=\"s3\">Jesus Loves Drag\u201d<\/span>, <span class=\"s3\">\u201cThe Homo Depot\u201d<\/span>) and full-on Pride souvenir cheese (\u201cNobody Knows I\u2019m A Lesbian\u201d) to outright subversion (Homocult\u2019s gratifyingly horrific <span class=\"s3\">\u201cGive Us Your Children\u2026What We Can&#8217;t Fuck, We Eat<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u201d<\/span>). Most familiar, perhaps, is Act Up\u2019s famous pink triangle slogan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wearinggayhistory.com\/items\/show\/3717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s5\">&#8220;Silence = Death&#8221;<\/span><\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/imgres?imgurl=https%253A%252F%252Fs-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com%252Foriginals%252Fa3%252Fd1%252Ff4%252Fa3d1f472fa033d53d851aeb5cf446f3b.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.pinterest.com%252Fpin%252F121597258667388937%252F&amp;docid=xNZrJlDGuc5H-M&amp;tbnid=ICRIhWY8y6HEPM%253A&amp;vet=10ahUKEwiT_quJ0_raAhWGW8AKHQi3DZUQMwg2KAAwAA..i&amp;w=570&amp;h=760&amp;bih=915&amp;biw=1191&amp;q=act%2520up%2520t%2520shirt%2520vintage&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiT_quJ0_raAhWGW8AKHQi3DZUQMwg2KAAwAA&amp;iact=mrc&amp;uact=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">Keith Haring\u2019s comic strip take on the slogan<\/span><\/a>), a bold, unforgettable response to the AIDS crisis of the 80s\/90s. LGBTQI asylum seekers know better than anyone how these two struggles overlap, facing a crushing gauntlet of home office bureaucracy, detention centre misery and chartered flight deportations. And while black communities across the States continue to resist state violence in its many, insidious forms, we\u2019ll continue to see bold resistance designs such as <span class=\"s3\">&#8220;Flint Lives Matter&#8221;<\/span> (in response to the Michigan water crisis) and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/dec\/27\/i-cant-breathe-t-shirts-high-school-basketball\"><span class=\"s3\">I Can\u2019t Breathe<\/span><\/a>\u201d (in memoriam for Eric Garner) in the headlines.
