Image courtesy of Taschen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Intended as an antidote to what Hewlett calls the \u201cdisappointing\u201d female superheroes of the 1980s British comic scene, Tank Girl \u2013 who was based partly on skinhead girls he saw in his home town of Horsham \u2013 helped propel the artist into the spotlight. \u201cWe went in to push the limits a little bit with that character and just be a little outrageous and say stuff that nobody said and nobody talked about and use words that nobody was allowed to use in comic books and try to get over this sort of pathetic censorship,\u201d Hewlett told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/38932\/1\/jamie-hewlett-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dazed Digital<\/a>. \u201cYou can\u2019t show a nipple, but you can show someone being stabbed to death or this other bullshit that we still have.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Atom Tan<\/h3>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1657 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/jamie_hewlett_gorillaz_illustrator_designer_animator_everpress_custom_t_shirt_atom_tan.jpg\" alt=\"jamie_hewlett_gorillaz_illustrator_designer_animator_everpress_custom_t_shirt_atom_tan\" width=\"700\" height=\"990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/jamie_hewlett_gorillaz_illustrator_designer_animator_everpress_custom_t_shirt_atom_tan.jpg 700w, https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/jamie_hewlett_gorillaz_illustrator_designer_animator_everpress_custom_t_shirt_atom_tan-212x300.jpg 212w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>\n<p>Fanzine Atom Tan was Hewlett&#8217;s first ever piece of published work, created with artist Philip Bond while still at college together. Published in 1987, the pair used a staff photocopier to create it and sold it to fellow students for just 50p. The fanzine was also the debut appearance of Tank Girl, who appeared on a one-page advert. Three decades later, copies of Atom Tan are rare finds \u2013 although last year a <a href=\"http:\/\/tankgirlshop.bigcartel.com\/product\/atom-tan-30th-anniversary-special-with-633-patch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed 30th anniversary reprint popped up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Common People<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1660\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1660\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1660 size-large\" title=\"jamie_hewlett_gorillaz_illustrator_designer_animator_everpress_custom_t_shirt_common_people\" src=\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/jamie_hewlett_gorillaz_illustrator_designer_animator_everpress_custom_t_shirt_common_people-641x1024.jpg\" alt=\"jamie_hewlett_gorillaz_illustrator_designer_animator_everpress_custom_t_shirt_common_people\" width=\"700\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulpwiki.net\/Pulp\/CommonPeopleComic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Common People Comic<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1995, Hewlett created a comic book version of Pulp for the band&#8217;s Common People single release in France. He approached The Face magazine about working on a comic strip for them, and spent a year drawing Get The Freebies \u2013 which was later turned into the Phoo Action TV series, which unfortunately never made it further than a 60-minute pilot. Image courtesy of Taschen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hewlett made a mockery of manufactured pop music by, literally, manufacturing his own band members for Gorillaz \u2013 which he says the music press refused to even interview to start with. \u201cWe all enjoy watching cartoons, and we all have our favourite cartoon characters, so why can\u2019t that work in the music industry?\u201d Hewlett told Creative Review. \u201cI mean most pop stars are cartoon characters anyway, they\u2019re not being themselves, they\u2019re pretending to be something they\u2019re not so it just seemed the logical step to us.\u201d The so-called \u201canti-band\u201d won Hewlett the Design Museum&#8217;s 2006 Designer of the Year Award.<\/p>\n<h3>Monkey \u2013 Journey to the West<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XT0tBKB2_PA\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Starring a demon-fighting primate, Monkey \u2013 Journey to the West was a contemporary retelling of an ancient Chinese novel \u2013 one that Hewlett first encountered via Japanese TV series Monkey. Made in partnership with Damon Albarn and director Chen Shi-Zheng, the opera took four years and eight trips to China to complete. \u201cWe&#8217;d been to China many times and had the real privilege of travelling round the rural areas, staying with tribes, which no one gets to do,\u201d Hewlett told The Guardian. \u201cOnce you get outside of the cities, what you find is a culture that is still intact \u2013 that hasn&#8217;t been spoiled by Western influences.\u201d His Monkey set designs served as a backdrop for Chinese acrobats and dancers, and the artist created an enormous buddha that filled the stage for the final scene \u2013 so huge it took five lorries to transport it over from Bucharest.<\/p>\n<h3>Monkey Olympics ad<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yr5ZWYRaAyw\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Hewlett took the characters from Monkey on an Olympic journey for the BBC in 2008, designing a two-minute animated sequence that followed them as they made their way to Beijing&#8217;s Bird&#8217;s Nest stadium. The film was soundtracked by longtime creative partner Damon Albarn, and was divided into shorter sections used in titles, trailers and on set design. Hewlett told the Guardian he was \u201cthrilled\u201d by the opportunity, although confessed that working with the BBC meant him and Albarn didn&#8217;t have the same luxury of \u201cdoing exactly what we want\u201d as they were used to.<\/p>\n<h3>The Suggestionists<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1679\" style=\"width: 824px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1679 size-full\" title=\"The Supressionists tarot cards. Image courtesy of Taschen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A 2015 exhibition at London&#8217;s Saatchi Gallery showed a varied collection of Hewlett&#8217;s work \u2013 everything from posters for fictional 1970s movies to spidery sketches of twisted trees. The show included a set of oversized tarot cards in Indian ink and watercolour, inspired by Hewlett&#8217;s wife, who did a reading for him when they first met. Image courtesy of Taschen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite Hewlett&#8217;s acknowledged status as a genre-defying artist, a quick Google reveals that there&#8217;s no single place that offers a comprehensive collection of his work. Although he told Vice that his work was never used because it was \u201ca bit weird\u201d, his illustrations did appear in some pleasingly manic opening credits for the show.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>Liked this?
