<\/a>Mangal 2 – Love Kebabs: Hate Racism<\/h3>\n
A Dalston institution since the early \u201890s, <\/span>Mangal Ocakbasi II<\/span><\/a> is a family affair. Originally run by Ali Dirik, who opened the restaurant after arriving in London from Istanbul in 1987, in recent years it\u2019s been taken over by his sons, Ferhat and Serta\u00e7 Dirik. Their <\/span>\u201cLove Kebabs: Hate Racism\u201d<\/span><\/a> T-shirt, which ran as part of our <\/span>Local Businesses collection<\/span><\/a>, helped raise funds for the charity Stand Against Racism & Inequality. <\/span><\/p>\n Aged 19, actor <\/span>Sebastian Croft<\/span><\/a> had an impressive string of smaller, career building roles under his belt, but it was his turn as Ben Hope in Alice Oseman\u2019s queer coming of age series Heartstopper, which ran on Netflix this summer, that guaranteed Croft stardom. Already, the actor has been using his platform for good. His Pride Month <\/span>Queer Was Always Here<\/span><\/a> T-shirt, designed by <\/span>Kieran Blakely<\/span><\/a>, raised funds for Rainbow Railroad, a charity who help vulnerable LGBTQIA+ people around the world escape violence and persecution in their home countries. \u201cOften being queer is sold as a choice or watered down to a trend. But it\u2019s not, and exists across nature,\u201d said Croft. \u201cWe\u2019re also robbed of a lot of gay history, and can easily forget how long we have been here for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Based on her <\/span>AZEEMA Magazine<\/span><\/i> photograph series \u201cSister, Oh Sister\u201d, <\/span>Najla Said\u2019s<\/span><\/a> Good Lil Muslim Girl<\/span><\/a> T-shirt was an \u201code to merging and harmonising hyper-femininity and religiosity.\u201d Said, who grew up in Cairo and has since studied in Paris, Boston, and now Berlin, <\/span>often questions or destabilises stereotypes through her photographs<\/span><\/a>, especially stereotypes around women. The T-shirt\u2019s playful slogan continues this theme: \u201cWhat started out as a joke with a friend, ended up being my way of reappropriating my religious upbringing,\u201d says the photographer. <\/span><\/p>\n Dating field notes for the digital age, since it launched in 2018 the Instagram account <\/span>Beam Me Up Softboi<\/span><\/a> has amassed over 680,000 followers. Conceived and curated by 23 year old Iona David, who first started the account while at university in Manchester, in the four years it\u2019s been running it has grown from a place to share screenshots of modern love woes, to a community. Now a freelance journalist and cultural commentator, David recently published <\/span>Is This Love or Dopamine?: A Deeply Unofficial Study of Dating in the Digital Age<\/span><\/i><\/a>. <\/span><\/i>Her <\/span>collection of tees<\/span><\/a> drew from some of the Beam Me Up Softboi account\u2019s greatest hits, with slogans like \u201cPlease tell me you\u2019ve watched Pulp Fiction\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n Bordeaux-based art director and illustrator <\/span>Gabrielle Monceaux<\/span><\/a> often weaves political messages through her work, statements like \u201cOur home is burning, what are you going to do about it?\u201d or, \u201cYou can only ban safe abortions\u201d. An intersectional feminist who is passionate about social and environmental justice, Monceaux wanted to create a T-shirt that poked fun at culture war hysteria. The result was <\/span>\u201cThe Hysterical Woke Cult\u201d<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Graphic designer <\/span>Emma Dragovic<\/span><\/a> joined forces with British-Iranian Tina Bozorgi to create a <\/span>T-shirt in support of the urgent wave of protests in Iran<\/span><\/a>, sparked by the death in police custody of Masha Jina Amini. For inspiration Dragovic looked to posters from Iran\u2019s pre-revolution golden era, the 1960s and 70s, and echoed what\u2019s become the movement\u2019s rallying cry over the past four months: \u201cWomen Life Freedom\u201d. \u201cWe wanted to elevate the voices of Iranians by constructing a cultural dialogue around art and design as a means to bring non-Iranian communities together to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran,\u201d <\/span>Bozorgi said on Instagram<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n We partnered with INTL Assembly this November to support their annual Glasgow creative conference of all things design, branding, advertising and beyond. The <\/span>resulting collection of tees in response to the theme \u2018Rebirth\u2019 were all standouts<\/span><\/a>, with work by design world luminaries including <\/span>Neville Brody<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Atelier Brenda<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>N&MS<\/span><\/a>. If we had to pick a favourite though, it might be this one<\/a> by Swiss type agency <\/span>Dinamo<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>who co-curated a recent Everpress collection around censorship<\/span><\/a> too. <\/span><\/p>\n Started by a group of friends from Palestine and Jordan in March 2020, <\/span>Radio Alhara<\/span><\/a> has quickly gained a following for its thoughtful curation and approach. Describing the station as a \u201ccultural space\u201d rather than simply strictly a music platform, they work outside prescriptive notions of what the Middle East is. \u201cFor us it was a way to go beyond preconceived ideas of contextual politics, the idea of using the radio is to transmit a voice that will resonate throughout the globe,\u201d <\/span>says co-founder Elias Anastas<\/span><\/a>. Their <\/span>\u201cSonic Liberation Front\u201d long sleeve<\/span><\/a> with us has been a standout, but <\/span>their designs are consistently strong,<\/span><\/a> perhaps in part because several of their founders are graphic designers. <\/span><\/p>\n A true multi-hyphenate, the DJ, performance artist, curator and activist <\/span>Lewis G Burton<\/span><\/a> created a tee<\/span><\/a> fitting for their hybrid approach and community spirit for <\/span>the Balance Collection<\/span><\/a>. A portrait of Burton, shot by Yasmine Akim<\/a>, accompanies a poem by Burton in celebration of non-conformity. Burton also runs the legendary clubnight INFERNO, which celebrated its seventh anniversary back in March. \u201cINFERNO was really about creating a space for my community, my friends, my peers who are artists, and who were making really amazing work at the time, and doing something completely different to what everyone else was doing,\u201d <\/span>they say<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n Part of <\/span>Femme Type\u2019s collection<\/span><\/a>, which asked designers to respond to the theme of \u201cGrowth\u201d, Neiza Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s \u201cHerself\u201d tee celebrated self-confidence, growth that comes from the inside, and doing it your own way. \u201c<\/span>There are many ways to grow<\/span><\/a>,\u201d reads the T-shirt (if you look closely enough). Co-founder of the Latin American branding studio <\/span>Ochodias<\/span><\/a>, Hern\u00e1ndez is a Venezuelan art director and graphic designer who is currently based in Guadalajara, Mexico. <\/span><\/p>\n Founded by designer Chris Fussner and based on the island of Cebu, Philippines, <\/span>Tropical Futures Institute<\/span><\/a> is a collective and design strategy studio whose work includes exhibitions, trend reports, music compilations, and some of our favourite T-shirts this year. Inspired by the iconic 1960s Philippines pop star Pilita Corrales\u2019s compilation album <\/span>Philippine Love Songs<\/span><\/i>, their series of long sleeves and hoodies<\/a> have cycled through multiple iterations. From Kristian Henson\u2019s original version \u201cwhich channels the everyday graphic objects in the Filipino cultural sphere\u201d to Sasha Magallona\u2019s pink hoodie, which features three stars representing the Philippines\u2019 major island groups: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.<\/span><\/p>\n The only specialist charity for children affected by conflict, <\/span>War Child<\/span><\/a> do incredible work around the world. As their music projects and events manager Sean O\u2019Daly explained <\/span>when we spoke to him about the Parallel collection<\/span><\/a>, \u201cMusic has always been at the core of War Child\u2019s activities.\u201d <\/span>Right To Dance<\/span><\/a> is Warchild\u2019s fundraising movement in collaboration with the underground music community. For this T-shirt<\/a>, which was designed by art director, graphic designer, and music producer\/DJ <\/span>Morgan Hislop<\/span><\/a>, they joined forces with London\u2019s <\/span>Waterworks day festival<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n Refinery29\u2019s<\/span><\/a> series of T-shirts<\/span><\/a> started life as posters, created for the abortion rights rallies that took place all over the U.S. in the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe vs. Wade this past June. Like all good protest placards the T-shirts bear slogans to help destigimatise and raise awareness of abortion, but they had a clever added function, with a directory of useful organisations and phone numbers on the back. \u201cWe just want to show people that there are these resources out there to help them safely access healthcare,\u201d <\/span>said Carli Whitwell in an interview with us<\/span><\/a>. All proceeds from their campaign went to the <\/span>National Network of Abortion Funds<\/span><\/a>, who work to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access through a network of abortion funds across the US.<\/span><\/p>\n Freshly graduated from Camberwell College of Arts this summer, <\/span>Mattia Guarnera-MacCarthy\u2019s<\/span><\/a> star is firmly on the rise. Already the South-East London-based artist has exhibited his works as far afield as Berlin and Seoul, and at the likes of London-favourite Guts Gallery too. For <\/span>his first Everpress launch<\/span><\/a>, Guarnera-MacCarthy decided to reimagine his favourite painting from his graduate show as a T-shirt, to give everyone the opportunity of owning his work: \u201cI really just want this to be a chance for people who have supported me and shown me love thus far to have a small part of my work,\u201d said the artist. \u201cNot only to collect and have sitting at home, but also to go out with and look good in, to have conversations about, and to share the sense of ownership of my work.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/everpress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-Mangal-2.jpg\")
